your wedding on Ærø Island
a wedding photographer's guide
As a wedding photographer, I’ve been lucky enough to take photos in many STUNNING LOCATIONS —ancient castles, dreamy farms, cliffside churches, palaces, seaside locations, etc.
But there’s one place that holds a special spot in my heart: ÆRØ ISLAND.
This little gem of an island, tucked away in the southern coast of Denmark, has an atmosphere so unique and inviting, it’s impossible not to fall in love with it.
If I should only choose a word to describe Ærø, it would definitely be dreamy.
It’s a small island, but that’s part of its CHARM. The close-knit community and COZY VIBE make you feel like you’re part of something special, whether you’re wandering the cobblestone streets of Ærøskøbing or cycling through the countryside.
It’s just you, your loved ones, and the endless sight of the sea — a perfect setting for a wedding that’s as personal as it is INTIMATE.
The locals are incredibly welcoming, making you feel like part of their COMMUNITY. And that warmth and openness extends to everyone.
As a queer photographer, I’ve been there for many LGBTQ+ wedding, and the island’s INCLUSIVITY was palpable.
Ærø has a long tradition of openness and acceptance, which means that EVERYONE IS WELCOME here. Even more: nobody will look at you while you hold hands and kiss in the streets. Which is a new feeling for so many of us in the LGBTQ+ community.
So, why should you consider Ærø for your wedding? Here’s the lowdown.
the venues
Ærø has a venue for every kind of wedding, big or small. ÆRØSKØBING KIRKE, with its 13th-century charm, is a popular choice for traditional weddings. It’s got everything — awe-inspiring stained glass, a rustic vibe, and that timeless feel.
The TOWN HALL in Ærøskøbing is a very popular venue for couples coming from all over the world. Not the prettiest place in the world, but it’s conveniently close to the town and to the harbour, and the PEOPLE working there are the kindest.
If you’re looking for something a bit different, how about saying “I do” at a local inn or restaurant? Many of these venues offer stunning outdoor spaces that are perfect for a summer celebration. Or, if you’re really going for that personal touch, RENT A PRIVATE RESIDENCE. These homes offer an intimacy you won’t find at a larger venue.
the vibe
Ærø isn’t just a wedding destination; it’s an experience. The island’s laid-back, relaxed energy is perfect for couples looking to ESCAPE THE CHAOS of everyday life and focus on what really matters — their commitment to one another.
There’s a sense of TIMELESSNESS here, a feeling that you’re part of something bigger.
The island’s rich history, combined with its natural beauty, creates an atmosphere that’s both meaningful and magical.
the activities
But Ærø isn’t just a pretty backdrop for your wedding photos; it’s also packed with things to do.
Nature lovers can explore the island’s stunning LANDSCAPES by bike, foot, or even by boat. Imagine taking a leisurely ride around the island, soaking in the views of the sea and countryside, or enjoying a quiet walk in the woods.
For a CULTURAL EXPERIENCE, check out the local museums and art galleries, or take a guided tour to learn about the island’s fascinating history.
And let’s not forget THE FOOD. Ærø is a foodie’s paradise, offering everything from fresh seafood to local delicacies like smoked herring.
There are also some fantastic WINERIES and DISTILLERIES where you can sample Denmark’s finest.
the memories
At the end of the day, what really makes a wedding on Ærø special are the memories you’ll create. Whether you’re exchanging vows in a centuries-old church, on a boat, or in a cozy inn, these moments will STAY WITH YOU FOREVER.
As a WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER, I’ll be honored to capture those memories with you — the raw emotions, the tender moments, the pure joy.
And on Ærø, those memories are even more magical. The island’s charm, warmth, and beauty make it a place where love truly shines.
So, if you’re thinking about getting married on Ærø, I say GO FOR IT.
